An Angry Spiny

Spinies are beetle-like Koopas that walk along the ground (and sometimes on the ceilings), they march along the path like a Goomba however, they have spiked shells which make them immune to jump-based attacks. Their spikes however don't protect them from projectiles as a Spiny can easily be destroyed with the use of a Fire Flower, Ice Flower, or other projectiles. The use of a Starman or Yoshi can easily defeat a Spiny. Spinies are often thrown by Lakitus. They descend in the form of a Spiny Egg and become Spinies once they hit the ground. In some games, Spiny Eggs appear but don't become Spinies upon hitting the ground but rather explode instead.

Relatives of Spinies include the Buzzy Beetle, the Para-Beetle, and the Spike Top.

History[]

Super Mario World[]

Spinies appear in Super Mario World where they are commonly thrown by Lakitus in the form of Spiny Eggs, they become Spinies upon hitting the ground. They mainly attack by marching around hoping to run into Mario or Yoshi. They can be defeated by having Yoshi swallow them, they can also be defeated with the use of the Fire Flower and the Cape Feather or the Starman. Fishin' Lakitus can also throw Spinies if their 1-Up Mushroom is obtained successfully.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

Spinies return in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. In this game, they behave the same as they did before. They can also walk on ceilings and spin into Mario or Yoshi as they approach. They can be defeated with the use of the Fire Flower, Ice Flower, or Starman. Yoshi can swallow a Spiny and then spit it out to use against other enemies. Once again, they are thrown by Lakitus starting out as Spiny Eggs. World 2's Enemy Course has Spinies.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Spinies are back in Super Mario Galaxy 2. They are much more aggressive in this game and chase after Mario and Yoshi upon sight. They are immune to spin attacks. They can be defeated with the use of the Fire Flower, Rock Mushroom, or the Rainbow Star. Additionally, Yoshi can swallow a Spiny, take aim, and spit it out at other enemies. Additionally, he can also use this move to break open Metal Cages to reveal goodies or Launch Stars. Spinies can also be thrown by Giga Lakitu.

New Super Mario Bros. U[]

Spinies also appear in New Super Mario Bros. U. Here, they are once again the primary pet of Lakitu thrown in the form of Spiny Eggs alongside the Piranha Plant Eggs. Spinies behavior is the same as it is in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and their way to be defeated is also the same. They are also more common in this game than in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
